Ordinary People- John Legend

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIh07c_P4hc

This music video of Ordinary People by John Legend is a great model of many shots used by camera operators. The video opens with an establishing shot of just the piano in a blank or white room (ofcourse accomplished by gereenscreen) and then John Legend walks onto set. This sets up a long shot of him where we can see him from head to toe as he approches the piano to begin the song. This video also uses a crane to capture aerial views of the set as he sings and it also uses a dolly to provide the zoom view of Legend then transitions to a close up of the singer. It also uses medium shot close ups and then racks the focus of the lens to focus on the glass of water. this type of shot will be used throughout the video. By racking the focus it also allows for a sense of a forground and a background. This video has great use of panning and medium shot close ups, as well as medium long shots of the couples as they are arguing and displaying intense emotion. It also makes great use of the space, while the asian family is arguing and the mother runs to get the child theres a moment where all three depth of fields are being utilized; the father in the back ground, mother in the middle ground, and the child is in the foreground. This video captures all of the seven visual components; space, line, shape, color, tone, movement, and rythem. I just wanted to take a moment to comment on the color of this video. I think that the producers were genius to shoot this video in black and white, it adds so much emotion to the song as well as details in the shots that are visually pleasing. The camera is constantly moving the audience through to events and the feel of the song, the aerial views of the orchestras in the climax was the just the best perspective to highlight the climax of the song. This video really does display just about all of the camera shots we discussed in class aswell as provide lead room for the subjects as they move about the set. The camera uses alot of close ups that provide enough head room for the subjects placing the eyes two thirds in the shot. From seeing the video i have already mentioned that I know a crane was used for the aerial shot and a dolly was mostlikely used for the manual zoom of the camera, but I also appears that a steadicam was used. It is also possible that the camera was mounted on tracks to give the viewers the shot of a straight pan from left to right. Another way to get shots that was utilized in this video were tilts. Tilting down on the set to end in a medium close up. And one final type of shots that the video utilized are known as over the shoulder shots (dirty shots) and also clean shots of just John Legend as he is at the piano. Over all this video is great in capturing emotion and I hope that you enjoy this music video of John Legends, Ordinary People, as much as I did!

Type of Film: Documentary
Working Title: A Day Remembered
Tag Line: Where were you?
Everyone knows and remembers the events that unfolded on September 11, 2001. However, we each have a different interpretation of what happened that day. Some were actually there in NYC , while others were far away from the destruction. Either way we are witnesses to that day in our own way. This documentary will capture and retell the emotions we felt and how we each handled what we were seeing in the media. I would love to ask around to find actual survivors of 9/11 or any one who was directly connected or impacted by the terror attacks. Then also to reflect and play tribute to those who lost their life that tragic day.

Type of Film : Music Video\
Working Title: Lost in Love
Tag Line: What is love without a tragedy
In this film I want to capture raw emotion of a relationship. The beginning of a relationship, the ups the downs, the ins and outs and how ultimately the characters are torn apart forever by a single event that would change their lives forever. The two main characters fall in love have a great time, then they fight and have a falling out until one passes away due to a tragic car crash and the other mate realizes that he still loves the other, but its too late and she has flat lined. Shooting in black and white I feel captures more emotion in a scene and offers interesting perspectives in the aspects of textures and dramatic lighting.

Type of Film: Narrative
Working Title: A Dream Come True
Tag Line: Life is but a dream
This Narrative will be a fairy tale where the main character is a young man or boy who falls asleep, yet the moment he falls asleep he awakes in a dream where the dream or nightmare in which he is in suddenly becomes his reality. The film will start as he climbs into bed on a very normal seeming night and as he falls asleep he then awakes in a surreal world that has many characteristics of a dream. and he will then past from dream to dream falling asleep in one only to awake in another, all the while stumbling across some strange encounters. Such as mythical legends or creatures, times from the past and you cant have dreams with out nightmares. There shall be one nightmare and the conclusion of the film will be at the end of the last dream where he wakes up and believes that it was all a dream, but in turn discovers it was all a reality.

I am currently a college student whos goals and dreams revolve around the music industry. My relationship with media is one that isnt to elaborate. Im not a very high tech guy, however I do enjoy using media and technology to envoke emotion or portray a concept that I want to get across. If I could use media in any way that I wanted with out restriction I would make music videos. They are a great way to tell a story and make the viewer feel emotion. That is the best part of making media is that it doesnt take much to tell the story you want. And there are many ways to use media to the your advantage. When I graduate I want to get a job with a record label in the new media department working behinde the scenes of an album. I want to work up and close with the artist to help in the pre and post production of projects.
